A patio has a different job than a driveway: nobody parks a truck on it, but people walk on it barefoot and set furniture on it, so flat and level actually matter. Around a pool it matters more — the finish has to have grip when it is wet and the whole deck has to fall away from the water. We pour backyard patios, elevated slabs on block walls, and complete pool surrounds, and we can build in a fire pit while the area is open instead of after everything is finished.
Broom or texture finish with grip when wet, pitched away from the pool so the water that comes off you does not run back in.
When the grade drops away from the house, the patio gets a block foundation wall under it instead of fill that settles.
We build fire pits into the patio while the area is open. Ask when you call — it is a lot cheaper before the slab is poured than after.
Edges tooled, joints clean, and no lip where the patio meets the door or the pool coping.
